So far tonight, where its currently 18 degrees, I have received many unacceptable tips. These tips include zero tips, a firm handshake, and a card that said “God bless you.”
I make $3.15 an hour and you are eating at a luxury steakhouse. Tip me properly you cheap fucks.

I worked a summer as a rickshaw driver that worked exclusively on tips.
Since then I’ve become an embarrassingly generous tipper.
No free rides.

Goddamn that's unacceptable

Does being British no longer mean I’m exempt?

You are rather unlucky... In north america, being a waiter in a city is “pretty good” to say the least. Most friend I still have there who do this (and they are many), make usually a minimum of 20$ an hour, most of it, not taxed. And that’s a minimum, it’s usually closer 50$ an hour during the touristic season... What sucks is to be the bus boy who gets a 20$ from all the other 5 or 6 waiters while they make a shit load of money lol.

Seriously? 3.15/hr is that the “we don’t have to pay restaurant servers much because they are racking it in on tips” exclusion to the minimum wage law?

See, I’m not a waiter. I’m the valet outside...

Yup, and I’m actually a valet, not a waiter. On nights like this I wish I was a waiter.

Ouch, that’s quite different indeed... I really don’t understand the tipping culture of North America. Sure it’s nice to leave a tip, but 15%?? No freaking way! Especially when the bus boy or the vallet don’t get paid for shit, while so many waiters (not all of course, jsut to be clear) get paid as much if not more than engineers...
You also have to understand those people who don’t leave you a tip... They’ve basically been forced to leave 15 or 20$ tip to the waiter. No wonder you don’t get anything right after that...

Shit that sucks, last valet I had I gave them a $20 for two parks and retrievals. My rental car was a carolla, more of a I’m sorry you have to park this POS.

So what’s the expected tip for a valet? I usually go 5 bucks, just because it seems right.

I rarely use a valet (not that I have an expensive car, I just prefer not to let strangers drive my car) but when I do, I always tip well. Better than I tip waiters, and I tip them pretty well too.
Food is one thing, but I want my car treated well.
Also, who the hell carries “God bless you” cards around with them? What a weirdo.

$5 is more than acceptable. You start to tick valets off if you go under $3

Kidding..
Minimum for Valet and Car Wash guys is $5. Minimum.

I would like to acquire that car, or at least drive it a few times.

If a business is paying less than minimum wage for a job but also not adding a minimum tip to the bill/charge to make up for it, they should be legally required to at least disclose the employee wage on the bill so customers at least know that the employee is getting shafted before they decide what to tip.
Also, that image is fucking fantastic.

Where I live we don’t have tips. I’ve never tipped anyone in my life. Consequently we don’t have exclusions to the minimum wage law.
It feels good.

Here’s a tip. Don’t walk alone down a dark alley at night.
Seriously though, $5 min for valet or more if I like them. Inside its $1-2 per drink at the bar and 20-25% at a table.

That is shitty indeed. I’m a public employee and a person was trying to give me a “tip” once and Im freaking out cause I can’t accept tips, and it turns out it was fake money with Jesus on it that talked about eternal life or something. And what made me really bummed after the exchange is that I realized that person probably put that in tip jars and gave it to servers and so forth. Next time I tip a valet, I promise it’ll at least be a 5.

Does everyone who eats there have to valet? I feel like that puts some people in bad moods about tipping valets.

No requirement at all, but it’s in a city, so there is a convience by doing so.

Wtf is wrong with people?
I used to work at a hotel and the GM was always a really bad tipper whenever he’d go out. Best way to immediately turn your entire service staff against you.....

At the risk of angering my GF I regularly park myself if at all possible. I really don’t like using valet since I don’t carry cash and I feel like I should tip at least $7-$10 for getting my car.
I did valet at a swanky hotel in downtown because it was required but they specifically has signs posted to just add any tip to your room bill. Which I did.

I always tip 20% unless something’s gone really wrong, or amazingly outstanding. Why do people do anything else?
edit - oh, for valet parking? I have no idea what to do. I usually pass on that.
